George Sipsis, MMI 2010
Master of Financial Economics Student, University of Toronto
"Being under the IHPME and Management departments allowed me to get exposure to the two areas I wanted, health care and business. The MMI program allowed me to work in a collaborative setting that no other program in Canada offers. The joint structure allowed me to secure an internship working in private and public health care that was beyond my expectations when entering the program. A business foundation is key for any life-science student looking to enter a management position, and the MMI program accomplishes that."
Arin Khan, MMI 2011
Pricing Manager, Loblaw
"The MMI program will serve as a gateway to every possible career option imaginable. This is what makes the program truly unique; the ability to competitively stand out in the work force regardless of task, objective or strategy. MMI graduates come to conclusions and recommendations from a distinct perspective combining an array of disciplines and formulating inimitable ideas that will allow them to truly excel in their career and beyond. This was the case for me, and I am sure, will be/have been for all future and past graduates respectively."

MMI 1010H Prices and Markets
This course offers an intermediate treatment of the basic tools of microeconomic analysis. Applications include: consumer theory, oligopoly, industrial organization, pricing, resource allocation, externalities, public goods, and welfare economics. This course will employ marginal analysis and the game theory to enhance your understanding of the business environments and the important strategic issues that arise in various industries. Issues of how markets work, when and how market failures can arise, and the consequences and opportunities for managers in those environments will be discussed.

MMI 1020H Applied Econometrics for Managers

This course provides a set of statistical and econometric tools that are useful in managerial decision making.

Topics include: Probability Distributions, Hypothesis Testing, Linear Regressions, Evaluation of Econometric Studies, Binary and Ordinal Dependent Variables.

Applications include: Inventory Management, Assessment of a Marketing Campaign, Analysis of a Start-up Problem and Assets Pricing.

MMI 1030H Marketing Science
The forces and dynamics of today's market are making the task of marketing more complex and competitive. In this context, a successful marketing plan involves complementing the basic elements of the marketing mix, with analyzed data, appropriate models, and simulations incorporated in a consistent and professional way. For students considering a career in marketing, the fundamentals learned in basic marketing courses are not longer enough to excel in the field. Marketing is not only an "art" but also a "science". In this course students will gain knowledge of the "science" side of marketing by studying multiple models used by companies and consulting firms, in the different steps of the marketing process. The "marketing science" approach of this course provides a deeper understanding of the process that supports the marketing management decisions. This course will benefit not only students following a marketing path, but also those students joining other departments or institutions that deal with the process of innovation. Students will require a deep understanding of the multiple tools available to support marketing decisions that without doubt, have a significant contribution to the management of innovation.

MMI 1050H Accounting and Negotiation
Part A: Accounting

Accounting is the language of business. Accountants seek to understand and capture transactions and events and communicate them to users of financial statements. As users of financial statements, it is important to understand this language and be able to interpret the information that is presented in the statements.

Part B: Negotiating

We negotiate every day - with potential employers, coworkers, roommates, landlords, parents, bosses, merchants, service providers, and even our friends and romantic partners. Negotiation is the art and science of securing agreements between two or more independent parties. It is a craft that must hold cooperation and competition in creative tension. It can be difficult to do well. Even the most experienced negotiators often fall prey to common biases and errors in judgment. This course is highly experiential - students will practice reflect, analyze, and practice again - and draws its insights from research in the cognitive, behavioural and social sciences.

MMI 1060H Finance
The course introduces the basic ideas of Finance. The problems of Finance stem fundamentally from the existence of time and risk. Financial contracts, institutions and markets serve to overcome these problems for individual investors and companies. The course analyzes the nature and role of financial markets and instruments, including stocks, bonds and options, the valuation of financial instruments, and optimal financing decisions of companies.

MMI 1070H Economics of Business Strategy
In this course we examine how firms select markets and technologies, compete with each other, and organize themselves internally. We study the actions of firms that are designed to reduce competition by actual and potential rivals. This strategic behaviour includes price discrimination, mergers, predatory pricing, franchising, and strategic use of information, among others. We then examine conditions under which regulators consider those practices to be detrimental and the policy tools that are used to curb harmful practices.

MMI 1080H Management of Technology
Many of the components developed in earlier classes are put together to allow students to build a technology business plan, either for a new venture or to create a new strategic business unit within a larger organization. Focus is on the factors which enable technological innovation and how these can stimulate the development of new business opportunities. We develop an understanding of the different types of business models which can be developed, not only looking at licensing versus new venture creation, but how this can lead to a variety of value propositions and market segmentation opportunities. We deal with the importance of addressing adoption issues, and of developing a strong IP strategy. We characterize the requirements for success for both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Finally we explain how the different strategic options come together in a financial plan, which underscores a new business plan, and leads to the creation of a document which is pitched to internal or external stakeholders

MMI 1090H Technology, Strategy and Policy
This course concerns the formulation of business strategy and the management of business enterprises in rapidly evolving, technology-intensive industries. Examples of such industries include (but are not restricted to) pharmaceuticals, computer hardware and software, aerospace, and telecommunications. These sectors are considered by many (e.g. Lester Thurow, MITI, Deutche Bank) to be the principal areas for economic growth in industrialized countries.

The primary goal of this course is to develop the participants' understanding of the nature of the forces driving competitive interaction between technology-based firms. The public sector in most industrialized countries is heavily involved in these sectors through competition and trade policies, through the protection of intellectual property rights, and via sponsorship of R & D in industry and in universities. Consequently, we will examine the logic (or lack thereof) of the policies which shape the environment in which technology intensive industries must compete. Also, we consider the managerial and organizational challenges presented by the technology intensive environment.

MMI 1100H Group Project (student driven)
As a capstone course, the final group project will be worked on from May - August. The focus of the project will be to create a solution for a real problem faced by an organization today. Utilizing skills and knowledge gained over the course of study in the MMI Program, the group project provides students the opportunity to hone their ability to transfer learning to the corporate environment.

In groups, students are responsible for making contact with organizations, getting their group project approved by the Program and completing all that is necessary in providing a superior business solution

NETWORKING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

MMI Program participants are provided with many networking and career development opportunities. Students are invited to participate in externally arranged networking events as well as career and network building workshops throughout the year.

Focusing on the importance of career development and skill enhancement, we have developed a number of career workshops designed especially for our MMI students - called Career Days. These interactive sessions are led by professionals with both a strong understanding of the career development process as well as the needs of the ever changing labour market. Through participation in the series, students are better able to identify their strengths and market the skills gained through their studies and group internship project. The outcome of the Career Days is that students are better prepared for the market place.
