THE ACCOUNTING INDUSTRY
Far from simply collecting data and reporting numbers, accountants are increasingly being brought into other areas of the business environment. How much do you know about the accounting industry? Who are the major players? What will you be expected to do one year into your job? Five years? What can you expect from potential employers? What are they expecting from you?
Students in the accounting specialist program will quickly become familiar with a group of international accountancy firms known as the "Big Four" which consists of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Deloitte and Touche, and Ernst & Young. Although there are many opportunities within the field of accounting students tend to focus on the Big Four, where the competition is most intense, to the exclusion of all others. You are strongly encouraged to develop your knowledge about the field of accounting, the roles available, and the variety of environments (outside of accounting firms) you can choose to work in. Gaining industry knowledge is beneficial to help you make decisions regarding your fit within the accounting industry, to help you strategically prepare during your time at UTM, and to help you navigate the recruiting process with knowledge and ease. Don't wait until your final year to start developing your understanding of the roles, options, and nature of the accounting industry.
